Sorry to contradict, but the vertical shocks on the Fox-body cars DID keep the springs in place. To remove the springs disconnect the shocks and pry out the springs.

Early model FFR Cobras used a cable to limit travel thus keeping the springs in place. They still may today, I don't now. My Classic Roadsters Sebring MX uses the shocks to limit travel.
