Ed,
I have been caught in the rain a number of times. If the water is too deep to run out the small holes, I bail out the car and dry it as much as I can with towels. Then I put a couple of fans in the floor and let them blow the carpet for a couple of days until it feels dry. The original carpet lasted about ten years. The second one is starting to come apart on the passenger side after 7. No problem, I'll pull it out soon, lay it over a new piece and cut it to match. Then I use spray adheasive to stick it in place. To me, there is no point in buying expensive edge-bound wool carpeting. If your car is show-only, go for it. My car is built to drive, so I buy rolls of black nylon carpet at Pep Boys.
When you're hard on the throttle, the heads are pushed back so hard all you see is the sky. What difference does the carpet make?
