I run 48 IDA's on my 289. While all the tuning was done by the prior owners mechanic, which I must say he did a fantastic job with the tuning after a lot of trial and error, it was my understanding anything you do (changing the stacks, installing screens, etc.) will require re-tuning to get max performance.

I currently run the shorter stacks with srcreens and the performance couldn't be better. My only issue is that the idle needs to run a little higher than usual (1100 rpm's) and occasionally if the car is at full running temp and is then shut down upon restarting you get a little vapor lock which results in some backfiring until it's cleaned out.

While they may require a little more work to tune, I love the set-up. Nothing is sweeter than a 289 FIA with a set of Webers. But if you are looking for simplicity then get rid of them.

Best thing I can tell you is its not worth trying to tune them yourself unless you have lots of experience and the correct tools. It's an art in itself - better off spending the money getting it done professionally so you have more time to enjoy the car.
