I had the same problem. I replaced the fuel gauge sending unit gasket with an RTV that was approved for fuel. Permatex Black I think, but any RTV approved for use with fuel is fine. I also coated the screws with it as they are exposed to the fuel too.
Just make sure the surfaces are clean and dry and give it the full cure time before you drive it.
On mine it appeared that the screw threads were exposed to the fuel and it wicked up the threads, not enough to see liquid fuel but enough to smell. If you pull up your carpet I bet you can smell fuel in the area where the sender is located.
