I once saw a large oval air cleaner that actually sat on top of the plug wire where it snapped into the distributor cap. Eventually it rubbed the wire enough that the spark began diverting to the air cleaner base rather than travelling to the plug. Sometimes really hokey stuff can happen on these cars.
