Default T5 Transmission Inspection

I am building a FFR replica and am using the stock drivetrain from a 1991 Mustang LX. I want to inspect the internals in the T5 transmission so I want to take the top cover off. The shift rod slides in the cover and through the rear housing to the shifter mechanism.

How do you remove the shift rod to allow the cover to be removed? There's a Torx screw in the LH side of the main case that appears to hold the shift forks in place (peeking through a 1/8" opening in the cover). Is this the key to removing the cover or certain doom?

Thanks.
