I think the "wide hip" is a reference to the presence of flared lips on the rear fenders. There were a number of mid-production 427's that had no discernible lip whatsoever on the edge of the fender opening; you'll see those cars referred to as "narrow hip" 427s in some of the literature.

Give her a set of Sunbursts and, ooh la la...
