Update:
Got it all back safe and sound.
The local UHaul rental place (on Rt 22) was fantastic. The manager there was super nice and only charged us for one day even though we had it for three. He was really helpful and didn't give us a minute of trouble.
The only trouble we ran into was that just before we were going to pull out, I noticed a piece of the tire tred was missing, so we called the national UHaul line to get someone out to change the tire. That was maddening -- it took them FOUR HOURS to finally get the tire changed. (Guy came out first time with the wrong size, etc. etc.) UHaul told us they'd put us up for the night but then recanted, so it turned into a festival of words...
Ultimately, we decided to head home even though we didn't pull in until 1 am.
The car rode just fine on the car carrier -- FFR put some wooden crates across the hollow part of the trailer (it had two tire treads but was hollow in the middle), we put some old tires on top of that (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, by the way), and set the chassy on top. Almost all the boxes fit in the car and in the back seat of our 4dr Dakota, leaving plenty of room for all the other stuff we had to pick up separately -- including a fuel tank and transmission.
So it ended up working out for us.
Now it's just a matter of starting on this beast...
