Default Fascinating motor, fascinating thread!

A local Cape race-motor builder told me that FoMoCo cammers were super-rare. He also said that they were built as an "answer engine" to the Chrysler hemi's domination of NASCAR. He said that the engine came in several carburetor configurations but "averaged" over 650 hp at the flywheel! He also said it was a "wider" engine than a side-oiler, especially "down low on the outside of the block/headers". He seems to know of what he speaks---does he? I would assume that the 650 hp figure is accurate and even low, considering this guy's consewrvatism and honesty. Is this stuff accurate?
