I've heard it from a guy who heard it from Southern (I know, I know), but, I heard it first hand from Eric @ Perf. Engineering. I know Eric tested it on the dyno with a 600+HP 522 stroker (Like Brian's engine: bnewell). He got 20HP less with the pan on. But, when you're talking "600+HP"....are you going to notice 20HP less?
I simply don't think it breathes as well with the pan on. You really don't get a lot of cool air through the hood scoop (IMO). Plus, there is no "seal" on top of the pan to insure it's only getting the little bit of cool air the scoop provides. The scoop really would have been more beneficial if it had come off the windsheild (like the 69 Z-28 or a 70 Chevelle). That's where the air is. ............but it wouldn't look as cool!
