In hot weather it helps a bit to isolate heat away from the fuel bowles on the carb too, along with the help of fresh air coming in and circulating around the carb and bowles.

I use to run the flat factory aluminum deflector shield on my 1968/SS and 1969/Z28 Camaros, just under the carbs. Without it, the fuel would boil in the bowles on those hotter days. I tested it with and without more than a few times. It does work. Seems to work well here too.
