I had the same problem, but then after a few times figured out a way to do it. You can't squeeze and let it go until it fills b/c, like you noticed, it will shut off. What you need to do is the following: Stick the pump nozzle two or three inches into the tank, pull up the rubber around the pump nozzle a couple of inches, tilt the pump nozzle back about 20 degrees, and squeeze the handle on the pump about halfway down. It takes a little longer to fill than your daily driver to fill, but not bad. Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to fill it while squeezing the pump handle almost fully.
