The tool inserts give the depth. The thickness of the cap of the "mushroom" that you insert into the line for the bubble, is how much tubing should be sticking out of the clamp.

The little black inserts in various sizes that have a cross section like a T the thickness of the horizontal part of the T is the measurement. Hope this was more informative than confusing.

practice a few on a piece of scrap before trying it on the real brake line, how much force you use while flaring is important.
