Ebay should do it how ubid.com used to do it. The auction time would expire when it said it would. However, if someone bid on the item in the last 10 minutes, it would extend the auction for another 10 minutes. If another bid came in, the 10 minutes would start all over again. This took the snipe bidding out, as there was no way they could do it. It was good for the seller and the bidder. Sometimes an auction would go on for another 30-40 minutes, but at least you had a chance to control the bidding and have some time to think about how much you wanted it.
