Jeff,it is my understanding that if you already own a car that is registered in another state, and you are moving to California to become a resident, under SB1578 you would need now to pay 0.67%(dropped from 2%)as a personal property tax of determined value of the car+the standard registration fees. You would have to pay sales tax in addition if you are a resident of Ca.,and bought it either in or out of state while a resident, which varies by county but is typically between 7% and9%. SB1578 tranfers are part of the total 500,thus all the anxiety. As an example, when my $63K ERA arrives, and as a California resident, I am planning on paying roughly$4,568 in sales tax(7.25% for my county) and$422 for personal property tax.The misc. fees will probably be less than $100,so I'll be writing a check for roughly $5,000 when I go in for my SB100 number. If I owned a car of equivalent value registered in another state when I moved here,it should be approx $500.under SB1578.Again,this is my understanding and could change tomorrow!
PS-I think Ca. may call the sales tax equivalent a "use" tax when you register a car purchased while a resident.
PSS-JeffC,why would you want to even consider moving here?
