Rick, I agree that the oil pan (factory on ford crate engine) has a shallow front sump....But since oil line is above both sumps, Couldnt I get a reading fron the front sump???? If the oil level drops say a quart both sump levels would move an equal amount? Is that correct? I do understand that if someing unusual like I knocked a hole in my rear sump or left the drain plug off in the rear sump (and the engine was not running) the front sump woul dstill say it had oil....but its unlikely that I would loose a rear drain plug while the car is sitting...and as soon as running it would be bone dry anyway....But wouldnt the front sump be safe if the oil is kept full?? I filled it and checked it and checked it when it was a qt low and my differnece between full and less 1 qt was about 1/2 inch or so..Isnt that safe?? Or am I missing something??
