I think the chassis/engine department did a hell of a job and the body designers made the car look "hideous". When one has to look at the car 500 times and force themselves to say certain things look good then there is a problem.
The original Cobra has EVERYONE that likes it. The Chevrolet guys, the crotch rocket guys, the "ricer" boys, the mailman, the police, all people of all ages, you name it, they like it.
I also thought the process was pretty awesome, however the end result is the car is just plain ugly. It can be fixed! I got the impression that Shelby and the other designers thought it was the most beautiful car in the world, so I don't see them changing the body much.
If they left the GT looking very close to the original GT 40, there is no reason they had to screw up the Cobra. They made it clear that they think the car is the greatest new car on the planet. I disagree and would rather own the 600 horsepower V-10 "test mule" Cobra Mustang, period.
