Another West Coast person
Nice to see others with the WCC. Mine is a turnkey, hopefully to be delivered in April. West Coast Bill in Vancouver, WA, also has a West Coast with a 460. So there are several of us in the club. Happy to meet up with you if you ever make it this far north, Naja or Mohuska...we can show you around Western WA state.
Look for my review of my West Coast when I get it, as I work out any bugs and get first hand impressions of all the options this car will have

gear vs. chain
hi guys,
I also read smokey's books where he mentioned that chain wobbling around like crazy, but consider that most of this was writen years ago.
chains have improved since that time.
gears are noisy (which I like) and tranfer crank vibration to the valve train, which may not be good.
for our (chevy) race engines we always used a belt drive.

2.75 Gears
Hey JW,
How are the 2.75 gears working out with the C6?
I also have a 460 /C6 in progress, planning on 3.08 gears.
Just curious how it behaves with the higher speed rear.

This Snake justs keeps going & going & going just like the energizer bunny. I kept even with a 5.0 to about 60mph and then walked away. had my snake at 165 and had lots more. Even with this 2.75 it puts you back in the seat.

I have a 77 lincoln 460, one owner, .010/.010 crank, .020 flat tops, 9.0 :1, comp cams 280H, Blue thunder dual quad intake and 2 - 600 cfm edelbrock carbs.Ported exhaust, hand built Hooker super comp headers under the cobra. built as a driver ,runs on 89 pump gas. GER street/strip C-6 auto with 2,800 converter and 9" Ford with Currie HD possi and 3.25 gears. the converter blows away the tires at any speed under 50 mph, so 1/4 throttle beats any street car.

Hey Greg...
Let us know when you have a chance to post some pics of your car. Titanium and black sound like a great looking combo.

cobra details
Hi, names dave from poole in dorset england, currently building a dax cobra with a 429 taken from a 1971 T/bird, rolling chassis stage and engine just rebored +30, crank reground, I am just finishing off the heads before the valve seats are recut, and surface ground.I have a question for all you 429/460 followers, the heads are stock 11:1, 75cc, will it run on unleaded or am I going to need new ex seats? people think I'm mad over here due to the price of fuel but as the man said its all about torque!! I am sticking with the c6 as I can't afford a tremec tko, I will probably be using a edelbrock performer cam/intake manifold and a 750/800 cfm carb. It's great to be able to talk to others with a similar setup, looking forward to airing my BBF queries with you. You are in a gray area
based on the age of those 1971 heads. I think it was 1972 when most U.S. car mfg. went to hardened seats. But if your heads were late '71, might be ok.
I would recommend taking them to a reputable shop and asking them. Machinists with experience can tell if the seats are hardened.
C6 is not a bad choice on these, since it can take more torque without breaking than most manual trannys that come stock.
Good luck on the build. In your area, I'm sure it will be unusual to be sporting a 6-7 liter engine.

Haven't looked at this forum since it was first put on the list.
I've got a 533 c.i. with Speed Pro programmable EFI, and some nice MSD stuff. The engine was custom built by an acquaintance that has done quite a few stoked 460s, and, then, set up with the EFI by a guy that just about everyone says is the best in these parts (Houston). If anyone is interested in more details, I would be glad to pass along any specifics. Just send me a private e-mail.

hi guys, just joined club cobra from melbourne, australia. Unfortunately not many guys over here are running big blocks as we are 'supposed' to use engines built after 1994, and all have to be fuel injected. My engine is being built as we speak, it is a 460 with tweaked edelbrock alloy heads, sequential injection(same as ozcobra is using, see his pictures), got no idea on horsepower figures yet but should make plenty of torque. Its backed up by a bullnose toploader and jag rearend with a 9" centre conversion. Look forward to hearing more big block chat soon!

I was planning on using the 460 SVO block with 4-bolt center mains. But will a standard 2-bolt block be just as robust for street use?

Venum S - If it's on a carb and on the street the resounding answer is YES! In fact I would not even consider using a factory 4-bolt stock block even if I had one (I DO) because if I screw a engine up racing it, I don't want to chance destroying a expensive block. Use main studs and a steel main girdle such as a Blue Thunder and you will be in fine shape. The use of a main girdle will dictate the use of a custom oil pan though. Make sure that the pan is as short as possibe to fit that FF5. Another option is to use aftermarket 4-bolt caps on a stock block but that wiil require machining the block and line boring the mains. Dependant on the block and aftermarket main caps you use (this varies) a 4-bolt/from 2-bolt block done this way is usially stronger than a factory stock 4-bolt block! I know of a 2-bolt block with a main girdle that's in a blown alcohol dragster and this is the second season on this engine. My blown 544 produces numbers no where close to that engine either and I am not even thinking about the bottom end of my engine. As for the SVT block the only REAL advantage I see with those blocks are you can bore them out more and with taller deck heights this gives you better rod ratio's, though this to has room for dispute if it is even worth while. Also the SVT blocks are stronger on cam webbing to. What's a Iron SVT 460 iron block cost now? Last time I looked it was around 1700$ I seem to remember.

Thanks Ron-
As for the 2-bolt to 4-bolt idea, Milodon makes 4-bolt main caps with angled bolts. This should make for a stronger block at a lower cost than the factory 4-bolt block.

I would check with Milodon to see what block casting that those caps fit. If it is a DOVE 2 bolt block that is required you may have a tough time finding one and they can be a bit dicey on costs to. There is other caps out there that fit the garden varity DIVE, etc. blocks to. I think the Milodon caps are the cheapest ones out there though. BTW- That angled bolt cap is called a spayed cap. There is some out there that are conventional strait up and down. If you use conventional bolts on the mains a spayed cap is better. If you use studs there isn't any difference between the two.
