460 SCJ Bellhousing, Clutch & Flywheel?
This is a basic question (I hope) for you seasoned 460 owners. I have a 460 SCJ for my FFR MK4 and need recommendations on the correct bellhousing, clutch, and flywheel.
Ford Racing says I should use the M-6375-Z460 flywheel but Ford Racing and Summit aren't selling them anymore. Does anyone know where they might be available or an alternative? I imagine there are many good bellhousings that I can mate with a TKO 600, but I’m sure those of you on this forum have had both good and bad experiences with some. I've heard not to worry about a racing clutch because the car doesn't weigh anything and the tires will burn out long before the clutch. I've been told to get a Mustang GT clutch and that will to the job and be more reliable. Any suggestions on a specific manual clutch system? Your responses will help alleviate some of the heartburn I've been feeling lately about moving forward with these purchases. Thanks |
When I do these combinations, I use a McLeod flywheel, a Quicktime bellhousing, and a McLeod clutch kit.
You need to choose the clutch kit based on the horsepower level, and if I remember correctly, the Ford Racing 460 was rated for around 535-550 horsepower. It's necessary to choose a clutch kit that will support that amount of horsepower. These cars are indeed light, but they can tax a clutch kit just like a heavier vehicle. A Mustang clutch that's rated for 300-350 hp just won't cut the mustard... A McLeod billet steel flywheel, combined with a Quicktime bellhousing, a McLeod pressure plate, and a 500 series McLeod disc will get you where you need to be. |
As with so many things in life there are plenty of choices. My combination, Lakewood bellhousing, from Mike Forte an aluminum flywheel,10.5"diaphram clutch in front of a TKO. With undercar exhaust was able to use clutch cable.
