Default Speedmaster '8 Stack' Down Draft EFI System

Just found out Speedmaster (a.k.a. Procomp) is now offering an individual runner / throttle body system like the '8 stack' systems. Ford BB 460 Speedmaster Down Draft EFI Intake Manifold System Complete Black | eBay

$1,350 for an IR system is attractive but, of course, you need to add the electronics, injectors, etc. for a total package. Interestingly, while they have the BBF ITB system on their eBay Store, it's not currently on their Web site. A turnkey 351W system is around $3,200 so, presumably, the turnkey BBF kit will be somewhere in that range when it becomes available, perhaps a bit more. The Speedmaster Individual throttle body EFI system have all the flash of classic Weber induction but provide higher state of tune and engine performance versatility of EFI. Delivering crisp EFI performance with systems capable of supporting up to 1000 hp. Fuel and air is delivered through precision cast aluminum 50mm IDA style throttle bodies that allow for superior idle characteristics and astounding throttle response while improving emissions and economy through tight air/fuel ratio control.

- Speedmaster™ linkage set incorporates the throttle stops, idle controls, lever arms and joiner/balancer all in one. It also features a single screw adjustment for calibrating front to rear throttle shafts.
- The bell crank has a fully indexable eccentric cable pulley that enables good slow speed drivability and still attain full throttle geometry.

Speedmaster™ throttle bodies have the following feature:
- CNC machined, Heat treated 601 Cast aluminum.
- Butterflies are measured for each bore & precision machined to a closer tolerance.
- Butterflies are secured to centerless ground brass shafts with split screws to ensure reliability and service ability.
- All are fitted with bearings rather than bushings to eliminate axial shaft movement.
- Housing to shaft lip seals behind bearings for extra sealing under high vacuum
- Idle by pass air bleed screws for super smooth idle and to aid emissions tuning.
- O’ring seals on lower mounting faces.
- Throttle Body Opening: 52mm each.


Speedmaster / Procomp seem to have a spotty reputation - some products are good while some are best avoided (e.g. bare cylinder heads are good, but assembled heads use questionable components and/or assembly quality). There certainly is a mixed bag of thought out there about them.

Very interesting, and certainly a more attractive price point at a significant discount when compared to competing systems like Borla's or Inglese's. OTOH, if the Speedmaster / Procomp systems turn out to be crap, they're nothing but a big, expensive headache.

Certainly a good price and hopefully they've made many upgrades and improvements since the 2012 article.

My son and i installed the Speedmaster stack system and the FAST multiport retro-fit self tuning engine control system. The EZ-EFI 2.0 It was really quite easy and a trouble free install. The FAST system is really self tuning. We installed it on a 5.0 Mustang motor. Highly recommend. Here are a couple of pics.

I was interested in an 8 stack injection system for my 351w and looked at the Speedmaster set up on-line. I saw SO many negative reviews calling the system junk that I turned away. So you got it to run pretty well then? No issues? The price is less than half of a Hilborn system but it's made in China. If I heard that more people were happy with it than weren't, I'd have to try it.

i fitted to the speed-master 8 stack to my stockish 302 in my GT40. it required a bit of work , had to get some machining done to manifold and mess around with fittings but overall it balanced up fine and worked well.

Good comments, I'm curious as to the machining that was required on the manifold: what was the issue?

I have seen the system close up and personal on the shelf at SEMA. I have not purchased it yet but after checking the fit and finish so to speak, I think it passes the "eye test" for me. The ITBs are particularly will done. The butterfly action and overall machining on those look good. The manifold is clean enough but that will probably be addressed as a port matching exercise anyway. There is something I found that may put some people off. I did not see any channels for post butterfly vacuum reading. They claim there is a plenum chamber cast into the manifold. You can see a fitting that comes up out of that area. So I think it would require routing individual vacuum lines from the ITBs to the manifold fitting for a true vacuum reading (need to verify that). The fellow I spoke to at the SEMA booth acknowledged this. He said that could be accomplished by contacting them before ordering. I'm not making this up! Anyway, the other cool thing is I have a 302 based engine. I plan on eventually going to a 351W shortblock. I would have to purchase a new system due to the different deck height. However, you can swap the ITBs to the 351W manifold for ~$300. It makes it sound good to me.

Right now I am putting a new tunable computer (Stinger MS 2 PiMP) system in mine so I will not be changing over to this until I have mine tuned reasonably well wih the old manifold system.

The linkage they use on this system will probably have to be upgraded as well. It looks cheap to me.

John, was a specific cam and heads specified?
It looks the business, but if any issues experienced, would you be kind enough to post them?

The Main issue was the sides of the manifold were not machined down enough meaning the manifold would not fit between the heads. It was an easy fix. Still for the price it was great value and I would one again.

One of the big problems with cheaper systems over the years is the aluminum alloy used to cast the TB's. When they get hot, they change shape. Then the butterfly's don't fit the way they used to, and the balance is off.

That's virtually the case with many V engine one-piece manifolds.

If the block has been decked, or heads machined in any way, especially angle milled.

John, what type of ignition system are you running with your set up? Is it the FAST. Is it the FAST dual sync Distributor?

Hey Kim, Yes it is the Fast ignition system we used. The ignition box #306425, their coil #308250 and their dual sync distributor #305007 because they are designed to work together, and it does flawlessly. Below is the correct distributor if you are going with a small block ford(260-289-302) They have a tremendous tech staff, very helpful. If you can, talk to Chris Ryan. He is the best!

Thanks John! Speed master is offering a complete kit but when I looked at the components I saw their distributor did not have have timing control, really just a cheap Chinese distributor. I'm thinking of doing what you did and use a complete Fast component system, worth the extra money in the long run. What fuel pump did you end up running?
