Default Ford Racing Introduces a 572-inch Super Interceptor Crate Engine

The marketing indicates that Ford is after the street big-block cruiser crowd with a pump-gas compression ratio, a moderate 655hp, and a street-fun 710 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm. The package is based on the A460 block with an attractive 4.500 bore and 4.500 stroke. Inside is a Scat crank and forged steel H-beam connecting rods and Diamond pistons. Rotator aside, most of the parts are from Ford Racing including the Super Cobra Jet heads that alone make the engine worth bragging about.

Here are some specs:
  • Engine Type: 385 Series Big Block
  • Displacement: 572
  • Bore x stroke: 4.500 x 4.500
  • Block: A460 (M-6010-A460)
  • Camshaft: Hydraulic roller, 0.649 lift; 259/263 duration at 0.050 lift
  • Heads: Super Cobra Jet; 2.20/1.76 int/exh valves
  • Compression ratio: 10.0:1
  • Intake: Edelbrock Victor 2966
  • Carburetor: Holley 870-cfm Street Avenger

I like the phrase "a moderate 655hp, and a street-fun 710 lb-ft"!

I would rather have Blykins or Craft or Kaasee build one. 722ftpds would be awesome in an old Thunderbird boat size.

Well, it is a Ford, after all.

Good point. I guess it only really needs a 2-bbl to make more power than a Chevy. No use in over-doing it.

I'm a tad bit surprised they need that much cam to get those heads to feed the big inch displacement. Perhaps the heads just are not up to the huge displacement. I doubt they will spin that monster rotating assembly as fast as the cam is capable of going. However I have no experience with such monster engines, so maybe I'm looking at it all wrong.

A 572 needs a lot of cam, relatively speaking. That's a huge engine.

With that being said, the Cobra Jet head is really behind on technology and they are not big performers.

Last BBF I did used Kaase heads, was "only" 529 cubes and made 740 hp @ 6000, with 700 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is still 35 hp above the 572 GMPP engine though, even with using that pathetic little carburetor.

My math says that at 100% VE, this 572ci engine should be able to pump the carb's maximum 870 CFM of air at about 5250RPM...

Perhaps Ford is concerned about the bottom end scattering all over the road, if the revs go any higher than that...???

I mean, doesn't FORD stand for:

or wait, maybe it was:

I guess they're just trying to protect the engine from premature:

All joking aside, now we need "572 Super Interceptor" fender badges. Oh yes!
