460 engine build advice needed
I am new to the board and could use some advice. I have not built a Ford engine in many years (I belong to a Classic Chevy club). I just ordered a Lone Star 427 Comp. kit and will pick it up in 3 or 4 weeks. I will be installing a 460 in the Cobra and would like to build it to about 550 HP. I am leaning towards putting in a roller cam and lifters. It will be bored .030 over and standard crank. I would appreciate it if some of you out there that have an engine running with similer HP, would give me your recommendations on engine components to put in mine. Things such as , ignition, intake, cam, heads, pistons, rods, carb type and size, etc., all that minor stuff.:p I have been doing some studying, but Ford BB is not the most popular thing in the parts books.

I am running the 486hp 460 from Ford Racing. This is a very docile engine on the street. Lumpy idle can be slowed all the way down to 400 rpm. It won't die. The added windage tray (usually good for 15 hp on the top end), the engine is in the 500hp range. Needless to say, lots of tire shredding power.
In my endless need to tinker, I'm wanting to switch to a hyd roller cam. I'm sure a proper profile would keep the street manors while bumping the midrange torque and high end hp. Maybe 550hp with same street manors. Sounds like what you are after also. Bad news, I haven't found the cam. Several people have pointed me to different suppliers of hyd roller cams for Ford 460's, but I haven't found anyone who has used them to report on their nature. With 11,000 miles in a year and a half, I'm not giving up my streetability. Bob |
I am pretty sure Crane makes a roller for the 460, I am going to call them and talk to them about it. I also need to call Lone Star and find out about hood clearance, before I choose an intake.

I have a 514 crate motor from Ford Racing. This is a stroked 460. It originally dynoed at 600hp, however, for streetability reasons I swapped out the original single plane Dominator intake for a dual Plane Performer RPM and put a Holley 850 on it. I'm guessing that it's in now in the 550-570hp range. This motor also comes with solid roller cam and roller rockers. The cam is a bit much (254/258 degrees duration) but in my opinion, very streetable. You can find a lot of information about Ford crate motors and racing parts at www.fordracing.com/performanceparts.
