Those big tubes down the side of your car that you burn your legs on, lots of the Racers cut them off weld on three bolt flanges so they now become removable mufflers.
I guess you don't see many like that at the Shows.
It's a track thing.

Mufflers. you don't need no stinking mufflers! Some folks have the flanges made so you can bolt on a set of resonators in place of the side pipes, 4" pipe all the way! Loud, huh? what did you say.
I think it is adviseable to always wear ear plugs, I use my "shooters", they were custom made and they work very well. Between loud pipes (It like a heart beat to me! soothing and reassuring), and the M-870, M-60 and about 100 M-16's at a time, don't forget the high piched whine of the twin turbines on the E Mod. Huey's, I'm lucky I can hear anything! Huh, what cha say?

Are you going to attend the DVSF II? If you are there, come and listen to my 351W. Most people think it is a BB and they are very surprised when I open the hood to show them the 351. I can remove the packing from my mufflers, which I will be doing at the fling.
The problem with turning down the ends of the pipes is that you tend to stir up a lot of dust which pi$$es off other car owners. I can tell you one thing, the loud sound is great in town, especially when you set off car alarm systems  , but it is not too much fun on long trips.

I keep hearing about guys setting off car alarms, is this just urban legend or does this happen often. If it actually happens I think it would have to go on my list of the greatest things ever.

Ikestaa, the ability to trigger car alarms seems to be directly proportional to the amount of "turn down" on one's sidepipe tips. Each year at the Texas Cobra Club meet (see the current "Car of the Month" photo for a pic of this year's turnout) the cars congregate on the top of a parking garage in Austin. When we leave to go on our poker run, the cars wind down through four or five levels of parking garage, invariably setting off several alarms as they do. The sound of the cars, mixed with a number of shrieking alarms, makes for an interesting cacophony.
The best car I've ever owned for accomplishing the alarm trick is a 70 Z/28 with turn-down pipes on the mufflers. They point straight at the ground. Back when I was in college I would cruise through the school parking lot, looking for a space, and leaving a trail of honking alarms and flashing lights in my wake.
I have heard that the 351 is typically louder than either the 289/302 or FE motors. Don't have any data to back that up, but that is what I've been told.
One of my earliest Cobra memories is of a 427 idling through the paddock at Road America, kicking up plumes of dust from the sidepipes. Don't know about whether it p.o.'d other car owners, but it sure looked neat!

Man, I love this place!
My suggestion for more noise? Drill out a few 1/2 inch holes in the underside of your header pipe, just before it hits the muffler 
It won't show, but it will sound 
Or run straight pipes...if you get the quick detach bolt on mufflers, you can have your choice, regular, or extra crispy

I would love to hear you car but I don't know if I will be able to go to Spring Fling II 
When it comes around I will be in school finishing up. (20hrs!) I have 21hrs right now! But I also was thinking of just flying in for a day and renting a car. Hmmm.....

My best experience of a cobra is one with a 427 idling also. I loved it. The second time was when Bob Kallio had one in his shop when i visited him. He cranked it and the shop was full of sweet FE music! It feels so unreal.
I don't WANT a cobra I NEED a cobra. It's like air and breathing. I just need it. Plain and simple.

gs, i found on longer trips its not the exhaust noise that gets me its the wind noise. lets just say my cobra isn't exactly quiet. if i drive for more than 45 min. or so i cram in some foam ear plugs. you will not believe the difference in the way you feel with and without. wind noise is very stressfull. heck,i get a headache running my impact gun here at work without ear protection on because i'm so used to them now. chris

I have a 351W in my Unique. I think it's about a loud as any BB. On long highway trips I use ear plugs. There is also a lot of wind buffeting and air pressure on your ears at 70+ mph. Once on the highway you don't need to shift and are not as dependent on engine noise to sense the shift points.
Make no mistake about it. These are not cars for every man. They're kind of like dating a beautiful female exotic striper. They make you weak in the knees just looking at them... but they’re a little too loud, a little too fast and are to intimidating a ride for most men.

I use foam plugs and ear protection when I go shooting. I'll just have to buy an extra set of plugs for my "future" cobra. They seem to be recommended a lot!

An idea for cool weather cruising !
I have bought a pair of WW1 pilot leather helmets, for my babe and I....looks great with certain goggles or sunglasses.....you also could wear a really cool motorcycle helmet. Both would reduce the sound on those cooler days. For hot weather, a set of earplugs or low profile earphones, for the STEREO, man!

My car is cosmetically too rough for Car Shows, and too pretty for the track. So I am like you!!
I just don't fit anywhere.
You seem to know more about car show prerequisites than most. Have you won anything at those events.
I've heard you haven't done diddley at the tracks!

As far as not doing diddley at the track, this is true as I don't do competitive events. I am just an instructor at a driving school, mostly I get the first timers. Like yourself.
