Good news on the valve train front!
There is a great article in the new Muscle Mustangs and Fast Ford magazine on some really trick valve springs being offered by Comp Cams. The valve spring is conical shaped (think shaped like a beehive) and the spring coil itself if not round but flat on the sides where normal spring binding would occur. Some of the highpoints of this design as I recall were:
1. Since one end of the spring is considerably smaller the retainer is much smaller in diameter (i.e. lighter). Even in steel they say it approaches the weight of more costly titanium retainer setup.
2. Since the design of the spring has a varying coil diameter they claim you can run considerably less seat and max lift pressures. (i.e less stress on all the valvetrain components, rockers, lifters, etc...)
3. The real claim to fame is that this design is said to eliminate the reasonance that is present in almost all valvetrains. But especially prevalent in high lift solid and roller cam application.
I'm no expert on this subject but this article was pretty enlightning. I believe the article indicated this product was originally developed for the nascar world. (Think substained stresses at high revs)
Check out the article on these beehive springs and see what you think!
