I don't know who this guy is, or if his numbers are good... but a search on 'google' for "ford 289, weight" brought this chart up
http://www.geocities.com/jaellis1958/engweight.html
It lists just about every engine I can think of.

What type of transmission will you be using behind that much HP? I have the Richmond Overdrive 6 speed in mine...but supposedly it is rated for only 450 HP...so my ~+630 HP will be tough on it...
A well built street strip C6 would likely be the toughest of the standard, affordable transmissions...but it's an auto..

As to my car...I have found a pro shop locally that has a dyno and does EFI tuning..so I should be able to get all that dialed in soon after break in...my cars progress crawls along....paint is still not completed after 5 weeks at the paint shop....

Only five weeks at the paint shop, count your blessings. My chevelle was at the first painter for three months, he quit. The next painter had it for two months. A two month time in between to find the second painter. Seven months, and I am not too happy with the paint either. Those guys inhale too many fumes or something.

All I can say at this point is...
For what I am paying, and how long I have had to wait for the car build up.....this one had better be one really nice paint job
Know what you mean about paint shop workers...I think most of them like the job for the cheap *high*

I've always wondered about the differences in the weight chart listings. The one on this thread says 100 LBs heavier for the 460. The one linked to on the thread says 10 lbs. lighter. How can there be 100+ pounds different. I have a 460 with Edelbrock Aluminum heads and an Aluminum water pump and Aluminum manifold. I am thinking I must be close to an FE's weight but don't know. Any guesses?

Shookie - My 544 with Blue thunder heads, brackets, damper and alternator, pulleys minus the V4 Vortech with a steel crank and no innercooler, weighed 545 lbs. Don't believe everthing you read. A iron FE is about 40 to 60 lbs lighter with comparative setups.
Mohuska- Let us know how your Force Fuel Injection setup works as I am looking at them. They have a "shortie" throttle body that is perfect for Cobras. The engine you described has a very familiar ring to me.

Im glad you guys have this topic its given me a lot to think about.I have been wanting to buy a Cobra for a long time and now that all the kids are gone i can change from paying for college for some of the things i wanted in life.Im trying to decide to do the FE or the 385 series motor.I know that the 427 SO is the most classic but the parts for the 460 seem to be cheeper, although with the new FE blocks and cranks it just causes me more confusion.I do have a lot of experience with the 460 my brother bought a 557 stroker kit from Flatlander Racing and finished it off with blue thunder ported heads a custom Hyd roller supplied by them and a 2-4 intake with 2 BG's.........let me tell you if you ever took a ride in this car you would think you were in the space shuttle and going to the moon. Those Ext balanced stock I-beam 514 crate engines with cheap pistons can't even compare, they may be cheap .......but (you get what you pay for). Now not to be out done by my Lil bro, i have ordered a 605 short block from Flatlander for my 69 stang and can't wait til spring.
But for the Cobra???????? the fat lady hasen't sung yet, ill wait to see how things are with the new Gen blocks,if it dosen't work out with the new 427 there will be a 605 under my hood.

I just ordered a 532 cubic inch motor from Flatlander Racing, complete with 10.5:1 compression. I will be using Blue Thunder Stage III heads from them as well. I hope this puppy goes like you say

Trust us, it will totally scare the s**t right out of you. In compairison most FE's are a drive in the park. Besides, 385's don't leak oil.

Yep you can get a 460 aluminum block for about $ 5,000.00. Same cost as the new Shelby 427 SO aluminum block....

Gary - The Donovon/Shelby block is MUCH lighter than the aluminum SVO block. The SVO block weighs the same as an iron production block, but you can do soooooo much more to the heads of a 385 to make much more power. Both are good, but both are very different.
