Fuel Pump/ ammeter

My fuel pump is noisey. Not that that is a bad thing, I understand that a higher flow pump will be louder. The problem is, it makes two different noises and when the tone of the noise changes, the ammeter drops to full negative for a blip/second. This happens or I notice this when I slow down so the engine lowers in rpm enough for me to hear it. Is this normal? What do you guys think the change in tone is? My fear is the pump dying on me while I am away from home far enough to need a tow. Let me know Thanks.

What makes you think you need a higher flow pump, is the fuel pressure gauge you have mounted after the pressure regulator, right next to the carb inlet showing a drop in fuel pressure below 3psi? Or are you just guessing it could use a higher flow pump? Are you sure you are hearing the pump, and not the regulator, which can be just as if not more noisy than the pump as it deals with a hydraulic hammer effect?

If the ammeter is in fact responding to the fuel pump, not say, the radiator fans switching on, the symptom you describe is not encouraging a long lifespan form your current pump. What kind of pump is on there right now?

I dont think I need a higher output pump, I was just letting you know that I have one. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge(I wish I did) I dont know the make of the pump, but I will find out. I do know that the person I bought the car from recently replaced the old pump.

All I wanted to know was, do you think the change in tone of the fuel pump is a bad thing? And do you think the sharp drop in amps on the ammeter is a bad thing? And if its is what could I do to remedy the situation.

Dane,

You need to make sure that you get on the SCOF forum now that you have an SPF..most of those guys are great at helping with stuff like this.

YOu probably have a Holley Blue, Red or Black...they are noisy as hell because they are a diaphram pump...they also either run or die suddenly...I would get you another Blue pump to keep as a spare just in case (we have gotten to where we could almost build a car here in Dallas with all the parts we keep between the group). The change in tone is just a draw on the battery....if you see the ammeter drop then something is drawing more power from the whole system...my bet is the fans...not a big deal if they just drop down and then kick back up its just the relay turning up the juice from the alternator.
