Default holly street avenger carb

I just purchased a holly 870 str. avenger carb for my 514, 625 hp crate motor. Has anyone had a chance to tune this carb with this set up. What Jets , power valve, diaphragm spring, timing setting worked best for you. Thanks Terry

Default Too Big for Me

I installed the 870 on my 514 in a West Coast also. This was not the crate engine. I built it from the Ford Racing short block. Bottom line was it ran WAY to rich. I took the carb to a local carb expert who strongly suggested I downsize to the 770 CFM, which I did. Runs much better and have lost the obvious rich running. Haven't tweaked it yet. The theory is for street use, the smaller venturis provide higher air/fuel velocity that improves torque. The large CFM carbs are better for racing. His opinion, your mileage may vary.

One "problem" with tuning the Street Avenger carbs is they do not have replaceable air bleeds. You can change the jets, etc. but not the air bleeds.

The car is down now to replace the throwout bearing, but should be back on the road this week. Later this month I expect to have the 770 tweaked in. If I learn anything in the process, I'll share.

How do you like your new WCC?

Cheers!

Chuck

I love my WCC. A great engineered car. Those wheels you have are awsome. So far this holly has performed the best on this engine. I had a eldebrock 750 at first, just could not get it to perform. Summet recommended a 850 Demon . That carb ran terrible. Demon tech support recom. a 825 race carb. The price was over 700. dollors. So I went with the holly. It performs well when Its warmed up. But until then It runs terible. What cam do you run. Terry

Default Lower Lift

Terry,

I'm sure my cam has lower lift than yours. I believe the crate engine has the mechanical valvetrain with high lift. I installed a roller hydraulic cam from Crane that works fine, but the lift is no around 0.600" and its a milder duration than the crate motor. Not sure just how well it runs yet......waiting to fire it up again after replacing spark plugs and curing an ignition miss from a bad connection. Waiting for a transmission part to reinstall the tranny and get it back on the road. Not until September. I see you've installed the Richmond Gear tranny also. Hope you got the new McLeod throwout bearing with the elbow fittings replacing the banjos. My banjos failed and I just got it back from McLeod after retrofitting.

Your car is a beauty. What rear axle ratio are you running? Does it stick well? I've not had any traction problems, but as I said, not sure I've had the engine running right yet.

How do you like the hardtop? I assume its from Vern? Does it fit and seal well?

Cheers!

Chuck

Vern went with the tilton bearing. He had so much touble with the Mccloud. Did you have much trouble lining up the bell housing. I was at the shop when they lined up the bell housing, trans, bearing and clutch. Not an easy task. I have the 3.00 rear end Richm. 5 speed. 3200rpm at 75 mph. in 5th gear. I dont have pos. Seems to hook up well with out it. Both tires spin. The car seems to launch out of the hole. A lot diff than my 67 vette with pos. I haven t used the hard top that much to comment. It seems to fit well. I still need to put in a headlinner . Are you going to the big car show in Mich. this weekend I ve heard over 2500 car show for the run. Terry

Default No Dream Cruise this year

Since the car is up on jack stands waiting for a transmission part. Otherwise, I would be there!

My McLeod bearing has been retrofited to the latest design to avoid the troubling banjo fittings, so I'm hopeful that it will last. I'll know more next month.

Cheers!

Chuck
