Default 460 ford Crate

Hey all,

I searched the forum for the specific PN w no luck so bare with. ;-)

I'm planning to build an ffr cobra and leaning toward the 460 cobra jet bigblock. Probably over kill along with extra weight, but its something i've always wanted to do.

I've looked at fords crates and wondered if any of you has installed PN M-6007-G460? Its seems to be the most streetable offer from ford. the other engines dont look practical and many of you have commented about the 514, way too much race breed for my taste.

Feedback is welcome & thanks for all the great pics.. Awesome forum.

Best Wishes
david.

I have my 460 rated at 485 hp with the previous SCJ heads for two years. The 460 has plenty of low end torque and pulls right up to 5500 where I believe power is on decline for the factory camshaft. It's excellent in traffic where leaving the trans in the upper gears and still able to smoothly accelerate.
I know the other 460 crates with more HP have hood clearance problems due to manifold height, so fitting the correct air filter might be an issue. With the Performer RPM in a SPF there is no clereance issue. I swapped the Performer RPM for a Blue Thunder Dual Quad and gained another 3/4 inch of hood clearence with the dual chrome air cleaners.
With all the aluminum bolt-on's ( heads, water pump, intake ) the weight come's down quite a bit, but it sure fills up the engine compartment when the hood's up.

I had the exact set up installed in my SPF. I have not had good luck with the crate motor. It sheared a timing gear pin at 300 miles. I then installed a canton oil pan and hi volume pump supplied from Dynamic and have burned up a set of bearings and a crank due to a bad pump. It may be my bad luck, but have a motor built by a professional. Ford motorsport has been lousy standing behind the cam pin and the other damage it caused.

Default If it has a mechanical roller rocker/cam

Be SURE to check rocker/valve clearance often (every 500 to 700 miles at first, for instance 300/700 mile points) and to remove the rockers and re-torque the heads/intake/water pump/etc.. at 300 to 400 miles. Things settle in there (gaskets, etc.. and you want to do this for sure!

If things settle/stabilize then you can extend the check interval each time.

Now have 1400 miles great engine , great power , great torque, great sound, i'm really happy with my decisoin to get the big block. Only problem is I wish I had a bigger fuel tank, so I didn't have to stop so often to fuel up
