Default 514 with starting problems

It's taking a lot of cranking to get her to turn over. When she finally catches it's more of a sputtering start. Once she is going there is no problem...runs well. Hot starts are okay but it sort of rolls to a start instead of a crisp turn over. If she is left for an hour or so the starting gets tough again. My gut tells me the timing is too far advanced but I figured I would shoot it out to the board and see what comes back.

Josh,

The hot starts being ok sort of throws things into a change. You could always back the timing up several degrees when it is cold just to see if it will start easier and that will tell you if you are on the right track.
Just a suggeston, but you might check the fuel and ignition to make sure that you are getting all you need.

Ron

What are your numbers?

Initial?
Total?
size wire to the starter?
Size wire to the solinoid?

If you think it is too much back it off to say 10 degrees and see if you can get better cranking like Ron says.

We shoot for 32 to 38 total and there are different camps on what the initial is set to. Personally, I set for total. Rev to 3000 and set the dist to 36. Then let her idle down and see what she is set at.

Just an idea

Not sure what you set up is, but I have the 514 with the Holley 1050 carb. No choke on the carb, so when it is cold I pump the gas 1 time, then keep it running with a little gas till it warms up. When it is warm I push on the gas about an 1/8 of the way right when it cranks. When it sits for an hour or so, still push on the gas a little. My timming is as mentioned above, 32 at 3000 rpm, and it is about 14 at idle ( 1050 rpms).

Just for S___ts and giggles pull out a plug and take a look at it after you've been cranking it. If it is taking longer than 3-5 or so secs to light off it could be timing. That plug however may be holding the secret. Any backfiring while this is going on? Like the last thread I have an 850 Demon w/electric choke, one pump on the pedal and it lights off. Had a problem with my butterfly's being too closed which flooded it if I wasn't careful.

Scooter,

What are your jets on the 1050. I have a 514 - but I am running a loppy cam. I currently have 76 primaries and 83 secondaries.

I had basically the same problem and it turned out that I needed to richen my idle screws (I currently get about 14.5 AFR at idle with all four idle screws set at 2 full turns out).

Hey 40K, how do you like the electric choke set up? That's the direction I'm going in right now but I'm not that pumped about it. I like to keep things simple and any time you add more wires there are more chances for problems!
