Again, it doesn't matter a hill of beans what he considered. It's what he ended up with that matters.

Do I think the Ford engine is better than a GM engine? Not really. I'm not partial towards any brand. However, I do think that a replica of a Cobra deserves a Ford engine.

Plus I'm sick of seeing all the 350 SBC and the 350 Turbo trannies in all the "hot rods". What a bunch of mundane vehicles. No one can think outside of the box.

But getting back to the point at hand: If he thought the GM engine was the best, then he must have thought the Austin was the best platform.

So let's just ditch our Cobras and buy Austin bodies! YEAH!

No question in the 50's Ford did NOT have anything that could be considered a worthy engine for racing conditions. The 272, 292, 312 Y blocks were hopelessly outdated from the day they were designed. Compared to the 265, 283 and coming soon 327 it was no contest. In that respect GM hit a MAJOR home run in 1955 with their introduction of that engine family.

Because it was SO superior to ANYTHING else available at the time it quickly gained acceptance within the race community. It had a good 6 or 7 year head start on developement and MOST important, on 'after market' parts availability. The early Ford V8 "Windsor" series had few in any 'after market' hot rod type parts. What was available was expensive in comparison.

It would literally be DECADES before small block Ford engine 'hot rod' parts became readily available at reasonable prices, much to the frustration of Ford lovers everywhere. The Mustang, notably the Fox body series, is what finally allowed the Ford small blocks to get some decent after market parts and research going for it!

Pound for pound, cube for cube, the Ford Windsor engine family is a worthy contender. IF you had the money in the early 60's, and Shelby, through Ford, did, that was true in the 60's as well as today.

Not to mention the race bred 427 side oiler, a serioulsy competitive engine 'back in the day' AND in modern times.

350 GM small block? Like Blykins said, bore me to tears. It's cheap, it's easy, it's requires almost zero work and no imagination! Reminds me off some women you might find walking the street late at night, cheap and easy...

Hi Sid, did you get your sale done? Hope you managed. Am I right to say the thread got pulled?

I found a guy here that has a 302 Darkside motor complete with suspension front and rear, more like a Japanese half cut, said he can put in my car and have it up and running for 3 grand, nothing like cheap labor. Some more fuel for the fire. Same guy also put a Mustang V-6 in his off road Jeep. Thought that was supposed to be a MOPAR but no one over here complains as it runs nice and does the job. As long as he doesn't post here, guess its ok.

History has a way of repeating it self......

I always cut a lot of slack for those outside the USA, I KNOW it's tough enough to meet the registration requirements and various foriegn laws. Especially those guys 'down under', bunch of outlaws I tell you.

Within the US? Choose wisely. Besides, the difference between an LS1 and crate 350 are night and day, not at all the same motor.

It's true Shelby went to Chevy first for a engine, but Zora Duntov was the head of GM's Corvette division at the time and realized that it didn't make much sense to support a program to put a Corvette engine in a much lighter car. In the end it didn't make much difference, the Cobra was still bad news for the Corvettes and just about any other A Production race car.

Maybe someone can answer a question for me...... I know i can build SBC with around 425 hp that has all new parts for approx $3000 and a 555 BBC with easy 650 hp to 700 hp for approx $8000 ( both engines would have alm heads and new blocks )......
How much does it cost to build Ford motors close to those? I have seen big $$$$$ in ads now remember I am asking for engines with ALL NEW PARTS,BLOCK,ALM HEADS.......

ALSO: pump gas motors only

It’s roughly double compairing your example to a pro built Ford. But what is the point? Chevys are cheap. That's old news.

Yeah, you hit the "holier than thou" nerve here. You don't have a Cobra and neither do I. If I had a Cobra, it'd have a Ford engine. Since I do not, it does not matter what I put in it.

And you DO have a kit car, although you may call it what you want. I've been around these things a lot longer than you and they only started to be called REPLICAs by folks who couldn't build them started to own them. Back when getting one of these was more than just writing a check, they were kit cars. Now that all you need to do is write a check, they have become called replicas, but they are still the same kit cars...

Just because your car was built by someone you paid to do the work for you, you think that makes the difference between a kit and a replica? pleeeeeeaaaaaasssssse..... You could have paid Jesus himself to assemble the variety and mish-mash of parts in your car and it is still a kit car.

Bottom line - you missed my earlier point - Your car is not a Cobra or even a Ford, so why is it blasphemy to use a non-ford powerplant?

Blasphemy I tell you, it's blashphemy!

Sure feels good to have a 'connection' with the cars of old, something I missed with my first replica Cobra, which had little or nothing in common with the originals. My current car does and I really like that!

Sid,

I finally did that very thing last night after a rough week. I got after it pretty good on a few of my favorite sections of road. When I got home at 9:15pm and shut the garage door, it seemed all was good......

Ahhhh, common ground... I am jealous of those who can drive their cars today. John and Sid, hope y'all had a great drive.

Just to show y'all I can take the ribbing as well as give it out: I can't drive mine because my BBC ate the camshaft in late May. I know I am opening up myself to ridicule, but such is life. I am pursuing a 540 with 700hp/700lb-ft engine that will solve that issue, but it will be some time yet...

itbites, wondered why I hadn't seeen you around for a while. Could it have been your 9 million pound valve springs?
Still thinking about that nasty 540, are you. Bound and determined to thrash me? Jeff Classic might still have that 540 he used to run, and it SURE makes a ton of power.
