Default 460 General Questions

I have the option of owning a 460 out of an old LTD which ran fine until the rear end gave out and the owner parked it for the past 15 years. They are about to haul it off for scrap and I asked if I could have the engine (and transmission). It's mine, all I have to do is go get it, no charge.

My question is whether or not this is worth my while to try to rebuild? I would guess that since they were in LTD's and there were about a billion LTD's, then this should be a fairly common engine out in the market. Can anybody give me a going price on a newly rebuilt 460 and how easy/hard is it to shoe horn this thing into a cobra replica?

In the least, I am not going to say no to a free engine, I could still realize a few bucks just finding the right buyer. However, I figured if I needed an engine eventually for a replica anyway, and this thing will fit, then I make out like a bandit.

Depends on the replica. Some will require modification to install the 460. The 460 overall is a pretty stout bottom end and you can make loads of torque over a broad RPM range with common cam/head combo's available.

As far as rebuild price it could be anything from crate engine at $6500 to $17K for a stroked, fuel injected monster motor. The 460 short block from Ford Racing is only $2200 bucks.

Is it worth getting????? Yes, it is........There were a billion LTDs, but not that many had 460s and around here there are getting pretty scarce........ A "core engine/trans" like you have described goes for anywhere from $250.00 to $500.00 around these parts.......

One engine/trans rebuilding shop here gladly pays $400.00 per engine/trans combo like you have described...........

Yeah, I figured I could make some money off of it. I just am not familiar enough with this engine to know if it was worth hanging onto it for my own or just cashing out.

If you plan on going with a big block, keep the motor, it'll make a great start for an engine.........slap some aluminum heads/intake on, a good cam and you'll have all the power you'll ever want and they are very reliable............you can reuse the crank and rods.... for anything other than all out racing, they will serve you just fine..........
