Default Toploaders and 460

I know you can use a Toploader with a 460BB, but is there a particular one I should be looking for. Most of the cheap ones I see selling on Ebay are from Mustangs and Cougars from the late '60s and early '70s. I know those cars didn't have big blocks, but will the same Toploader for them work for a 460 from the '70s? Anything else I need to know?

I would like to find a used (cheap) TKO 600, but I can't find any out there! I want to go as cheap as possible, because I'm still saving for my Cobra.

Thanks,
Joe

If you want the scoop on Top Loaders call David Key Top Loaders.

Basicly there are 2 top loaders, a BB and SB kind( this doesn't include the close or wide ratios or tailshafts, just basic construction). The BB has a bigger input shaft. Many Mustangs of the years you mentioned came with Big Blocks,so the trans may have been the correct type.BBs came in Mustangs and Cougars since 1968, they ran through the early 70s.

You want whats called a big input / big output with a short "nascar" tail. But, like xlr8or said, call David Kee and talk to him, he's the man. Then tell him your rear end ratio so together you can decide weither you want a close or wide ratio trans, I have a close ratio with a 3:70 rear and like it just fine.

They were called "bullnose toploaders with the big shaft", getting harder to find and not overly cheap either.

Andy.

All 427,428 and 429's came with close ratio (2.32 1st gear) 31 spline transmissions. If you want a wide ratio (2.78 1st gear) 31 spline trans they put them in 71-73 torinos but they have the smaller input shaft, which can be changed.
