Help with clearance problems Ford 514
I recently purchased a superformance with a ford racing crate 514 motor. It has a hise rise manifold with a single holley dominator carb. This creates a problem since the carb barely clears the outer edge of the hood scoop with the hood closed and obviously that leaves no room for any type of air filter. I was wondering if there is anyone else with this engine that has changed the manifold to a lower profile one what one they have used while keeping the dominator carb.

Allow me to guess you're outta luck
The lowest intake for a 385 series is the Edelbrock Torker II which is set up for a regular base Holley. Look on Edelbrock's site and you can see relative manifold heights: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_...ord/ford.shtml
The Torker II is 3.5" and 4.25" where their Dominator manifold is 6.3" and 6.3"
The Torker would give around 2" more clearance based on these measurements. If you find a Dominator manifold that is 2" lower (or more) please let the rest of us know!

Your options are many….. I have had just about every combination on top of my 514, but this is how it’s currently configured. Dominator on a Victor Jr. intake with custom drop base filter.
The biggest challenge is the air cleaner. I made my own. I also milled .010” off the intake and dropped the engine with my own motor mounts. Here is a link with some more photos. http://craigscobras.com/projects/1050ac/
Another configuration I tried was modifying an Edelbrock Pro-Flo. This works well but will not filter as well as the K&N Filter

Ditto what Tom W said, my Ford Crate has to use a Torker II that I milled the carb pad down another 0.250 inches to clear the hood on the West Coast kit design and I have to use the super thin and restrictive FORD COBRA oval air filter but once I have the body mounted I plan to explore other options to see how low I can go.

Yep, I've got a Torker II on a 1025 Demon RS and can run a 14" air cleaner setup.
That's the best setup.

Hood clearance woes
I have a BB ford with a Vic. Jr. intake on it, using a 2 1/2" tall filter and have a much larger than normal cobra hood scoop. I milled down the filter base at an angle that lets it parallel the hood scoop instead of the engine (which angles upward slightly). (K&N sells filters with bases angled at 10, 20 and 30 degrees for just this purpose). This cleared the filter along all but the very edges of its 8 1/2" width...sigh! Crafting my own dropbox for the outer half of the filter base will allow me to finally close my hood but it's not ideal.....even with a breather top to the filter it will be hindered by its proximity to the hood. That's another reason I'm considering changing to the Performer RPM intake manifold...not tuned to the original engine specs but then I'd gain another 3/4" clearance.

I worked my way through the same headache.After talking with K&N about how much air a healthy 460 needed,their answer dictated how much height I would have to deal with.In my case,I took the stock hood off stashed it away,bought another hood,found the right Harwood scoop, fit it to the new opening after cutting the too small scoop out of new hood,then paint.Now the K&N fits neatly up in the air stream,and this motor does not shut off.

Knowing all this sure helps when it comes to setting up these cars.The 385 series motor in my car was destined to have a larger hood scoop.It gave my car the character I wanted.

I know this is an older thread but....
If there is still interest in a Torker II height Dominator flange manifold please let me know. I have many years of experience in modifying manifolds and can probably come up with just what you need. With a little help from the owner(s) I can angle the carb mount flange to exactly what is needed for the car/motor combo.

Don't fear going to the Torker II....Someone, (I think Jon Kaase), did some dyno testing a while back and proved that the Torker II did not give up much (maybe 4-5) hp compared to some of the taller varieties for all but the real high RPM ranges.

No matter what a person decides on with these cars,there are enough choices to make it all work and leave the car looking downright awesome.After all they are toys,make them all they can be.Total satisfaction is achieveable and it is certainly worth the time and money spent getting there!!!

I have an FE with a Demon that would not fit a long oval air cleaner until I made fairly extensive mods to the base plate. I ground the carb ring down to nothing in the rear, about half original height in the front, and tapered. This meant I had to drill a hole to let the rear carb float screw pass through the baseplate. To seal the gap, I epoxied in a soft bulls-eye gasket from a generic brake-fluid lid replacement. Dropped the rear of the AC about an inch, from a half inch interference to a half inch clearance.
