The choice is endless, but what is common with all the suggestions to date is keep the power within a budget.
I went through just the same issue - conserve fuel during the week and don't give a damn at the weekend.
I went for an Echo (at $16,000 on the road new) and only fill up once a month - what more do you want (OK, quite a bit).
Excellent for parking - nipping here, nipping there.
Having a Cobra, Landcruiser and now the echo, I can cover all extremes of motoring.
You're welcome for a test drive only don't expect to leave rubber when exiting the drive!
Seriously, this thing cruises at 120 kph with a twin cam 1.3L engine.
I would have gone for the mini, but at $35,000 new what was the point. The money I saved I can empty into the bottomless snake pit.
