I use mine quite a lot. It is very true the small collection jar is too small.
I took a "Mason" jar lid (those disk things) and drilled two holes in it about 1" apart. Then I soldered two brass double ended hose nipples in the holes, maybe 5/16" nipples. Then a hose is attached to one of the hose nipples on the inside of the lid, this hose will hang down into the liquid. The lid is assembled on a jar, I have 1/2 and full quart sizes, and two hoses are attached on the nipples on the outside of the lid.
I don't think a gallon size jar would be much fun, you have to draw a vacuum on the volume of the jar. A gallon would be lots of pumping on a Mity-vac.
Note that you can blow fluids into something also, just fill the jar and reverse the hose connections.
