Default meatball application

Last week I applied 4 brand new FinishLine meatballs for a local tour. I applied them dry, just rubbing all the bubbles out as best I could. When I recovered the ones that blew off, I realized that I must be missing a trick in the application process.

What is the best application process? Straight water with a sponge or squeege (won't the water dry out?). Perhaps adding a little glycerin to the water to make it last? Do you prefer a sponge or squeege or some other applicator?

The look is great, but not if they blow off.

Thanks!
