Tampa: The shifter is taken apart by unbolting the handle from the shifter mechanism, turn it upside down and look in the center bore and the is a small brass washer that is soldered to a multistrand wire running through the lever, it must be unsoldered and the pushed out through the tube and "T" handle and out the top where the knob screws on. Take note of how the pieces fit so you can reassemble it and resolder (use silver solder it is stronger) the cable or use a small crush sleeve on the cable.

Ernie: The boot can be replaced over the "T" handle if you are careful and use a small bit of lubricant, maybe K-Y or silicone spray???
Carefully pry one part of the boot over one side of the "T" at a time. It looks like it won't go but I have done it twice.
