When you registered your car, I presume you already had a title. When you buy a new kit, it only comes with a certificate of origin, and not a title. In order to get the title for a new kit, you have to go through a special safety inspection for reconstructed vehicles before they will give you a title. They check the year of the engine during the safety inspection.
But you're right, once you've got the title, collector registration is the way to go.
