The center hub section is precision cast to a conical shape which mates the wheel. The pins carry the rotational load while the hubs support the directional loads, g forces etc.

Wheels are alloy, aluminum or magnesium but can be any material, carbon fiber steel etc. Alloy wheels use no sleeve as there is no (theoretically no) movement between the pin and the wheel face.
