Sagacious:
The reason for mixing the ratios is to "HELP" a lazy port design. In the past Fords were notorious for poor exhaust ports flow on the small block 289/302 and it became worse with the 351 (similar port size) consequently by effectively changing the lift and duration of the exhaust valve, it helped the gas flow considerably, but more recently dual pattern cams and redesigned ports have become the norm.
