The dipstick should show the oil level when you're at least two quarts low. I don't know where the baffle is on a Milodon, but if it's close to or above the normal oil level, you'll have to modify the pan so that the dipstick goes down into the oil more.

If the pan's off, fill the pan with normal oil capacity minus two quarts to check the baffle position. Afterward, you can even add another two quarts to actually get a height measurement that you can use to mark your dipstick.
