I have to agree with Mike here.
I lost reverse a couple of years back, and it was because of a broken reverse band.
When that went there was no reverse to be found anywhere.
You may also find that 1st gear will not engage or only just, this would confirm the shift problem.
This would be easier and cheaper to fix than a broken band.
