You don't have to have the driveshaft installed. Just mark one of the ears of the yoke on the pinion gears that the driveshaft bolts to and turn your wheel one full turn as described above. Count the times the yoke turns. Example, one turn of wheel = 3 turns of yoke and you have 3:00 gears. 1 1/2 turns of yoke = 3:56 or whatever is in that range.
