There are some thin nylon/teflon pads under the advance weights that are intended to reduce friction. I had a situation where after sitting for a Winter the pads disintegrated totally for some unknown reason. It may have caused a problem similar to what you describe had I not discovered it before the first drive in the Spring.

The bottom of the gear (Thrust Surface) is pulled down to the machined surface in the block.
