Well let me see now, how would you check the ripeness of coconuts? I know that when you check mellons you want to sneek up from behind and firmly>>>>>>>>>>>Oh never mind.
With coconuts I believe that you need to have two of them at a time. If they are the green type that have just fallen off of the tree you want to pick them up (one in each hand) gently shake them, gently now! If you here milk swishy around inside they are ready for consumption. If they are the hairy brown type like the ones you would see in the grocery stores around here you would first close your eyes and then pick them up in each hand, slowly bring them up to your nose and sniff them. When doing this be sure to really snuggle your nose between them. If you feel very brave you could touch your tounge to them. If they do not smell musty or taste salty they are ready to be clashed together until they break open at which time you could scrape out the nuget. That is how I saw them do it on "Survivor" if it is not the correct procedure I recommend we contact "HI Cobra" from Hawaii I'm sure he would know how. Afiter all, all they can do in Hawaii is just drive around in circles so they have lots of time to ponder on it.
