David,
Your right in the fact that Ford was campaining their GT mustang with the 428 CJ, known today as JET cars, it would only be a dealer that may have changed this car if it happened, maybe to be different. Not that Shelby's were not raced , mine was a weekend racer and the owners brother also raced a GT500, both cars did really well in stock classes.
