I've had lots of good results with reliability in Delco (GM) alternators, and not such good results with Ford, particularly externally regulated ones. So I'm using an ordinary '72 - '84 non-metric 63 amp unit with a chrome case. It's a standard factory 2 wire unit. I like the 2 wire units because the alt starts charging when you start the engine, and charges while idling.
The charge wire goes to the battery like the one wire units do, and the other goes to the ignition wire. My ignition wire goes to ign wire on MSD box, carb elect choke, and alt. Have a Radio Shack diode in-line at alt to eliminate feed back to ignition. It's not that big of a deal, is what I'm saying.
Standard reconditioned about $59 - $79. Chrome was $99. Sounds like others have done this if Roush makes a bracket set for SBF. Be sure alt doesn't interfere with upper control arm on Cobras.
Powermaster is good also. You get a new, not reconditioned unit. I'm using PM starter ($159), and it's great. About half the size and weight of stock Ford.
