After about 20,000 miles my rear fenders were pretty beatup. I bought a spray can of rocker panel protetor that was sapposed to be clear. It dried milky white. Very ugly. I then sprayed over it with black and the spats look fine. If I ever repaint the car I'll go with the clear 3M film but until then I'll live with the spats.
