I'd love to see those articles.............seriously. I did see one C&D or R&T review in the last year that wasn't very flattering overall, but am not aware of others. I think the Cobra finished last in a 5-6 car comparo.
The C&D article is on the FFR website somewhere and yes, it did come in pretty low on the overall vote. But that took into account things like comfort, weartherproofness (??) and other subjective things. It won almost all the performance tests, some by a very large margin. It was set up for some serious autocross with 17s but was still bested in some of the handling tests by the Elise and a Super 7/Caterham thing.
FFR will send you the DVD free, the racing vids really are great.
My point was about Cobras as originally set up. No doubt, you can build something that looks like a Cobra with modern technology, modern low profile tires, etc., that will do very well on the track. I don't care for the 17" low-profile look on my Cobra, but I don't want to race it either. I like it for a different reason.
Personal preferences are all that matter.........
Agreed, I'm building a very traditional looking car too. I intend to use it for pleasure, not the track or street racing and don't care if I can blow off ZO6s. I also don't expect a car, or even a 'modern' version of it to keep up with the state of the art 40 years later. That the Cobra can even come close is simply a testament to a great idea and the fact that some people just won't let that idea go and keep 'tweaking' it.
