Default Engine size - Thoughts wanted

I am building an FIA car (from ERA, with racing brakes and rear) and would like to get some thoughts on what others have done for engine size and power.

I live in the Northeast, and plan on driving the car on as many nice days as possible, along with the occassional trip to the track. I would like it to be fun, safe and reliable on the street, and quick at the track. I am not looking to build something authentic, so I am open to a 289/302 or 351 based block.

I am leaning towards purchasing a crate engine from Ford, Roush or another engine builder. Power seems to vary from 400 - 500hp, with corresponding levels of toque.

I would be interested in getting others opinions (recognize this can be an emotional topic, but please try to think through how I plan on using this car) on what might be a good fit for this car, what others have done, and how happy they are with their choice.

Your thoughts are appreciated.
